Essential Oils

Plants naturally produce antimicrobial substances to defend themselves against environmental stressors such as fungus or bacteria.  Since the dawn of time humans have developed various ways to extract those antimicrobial substances from herbs and use them for medicinal purposes. To remove bioactive ingredients one can make tea from leaves, roots or bark (infusion), grind up the dried plant into a powder for consumption or soak the plant in alcohol or glycerin or to make an extract. In some cases it is possible to derive essential oils from the plant through a distillation process.

Essential oils distilled from plants and herbs have typically the highest potency above all other extraction methods. One can think of oils as the essence of the plant. Oils also have the highest energy density compared to other forms of food such as fruit or meat.

The other interesting aspect of essential oil is its molecular size, which translates directly into the aroma and volatility of the oil. If you put a few drops of pure clove oil on a piece of white cloth the aroma will immediately fill the room. After a few minutes you will observe that the stain on the cloth has disappeared. The oil has fully evaporated into the surrounding air.  You may be able to smell it for a long time. It has been said that essential oils – because of their small molecular size – are able to cross the brain blood barrier (I have not come across any academic references though confirming this).  This makes it very interesting for treating Neuro Lyme, as essential oils may be able to get to places that standard antibiotics can’t reach.

How do Essential Oils work?

Essential oils can be used with a variety of techniques.

1. A diffuser- Oils are placed in a device with water that blows the oils directly into the air. I recommend this method.

2. You can use the oils ‘dry’ on a cotton ball and smell it when needed or keep it close by.

3. Steam- You can put the oils into a basin or bowl of steaming water. The oils attach to the steam molecules and rise. Place your head over the bowl with a towel over you and breath deeply. This method is very potent.

4. You can use the oils in a spray bottle with water.

5. You can apply the oils ‘neat’ which basically just means to apply to the skin. I always suggest using oils with a carrier oil so you avoid irritating your skin,Coconut oil is my favorite carrier but there are several others you can use. I use one to three drops of essential oil per teaspoon of carrier oil. 3 drops of essential oil is a 3% solution, 1 drop is a 1 % solution etc.. For very sensitive skin or for children I would cut it back to a .5% solution to start until you see how it works with your body

6. You can use essential oils in the bath. Put them in a carrier oil first.

7. You can apply the oils to the affected area with a carrier oil then apply a warm compress.

I typically tell people to start off by applying to the bottom of the feet. Here’s a helpful chart.

LYME PROTOCOL OILS

  • Clove – Strong antimicrobial activity effective against many different microbes. clove oil is both an analgesic and an antiseptic. You may recall the smell of clove oil from your dentist office. It is particularly effective against borrelia and bartonella coinfections (See Schaller’s book “The Diagnosis, Treatment and Prevention of Bartonella” where he talks about clove oil as one of the main herbal remedies for bartonella). Clove oil has an ORAC value of over 1 million, which is extremely high. ORAC or Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity is a measure of free radical inhibition. Clove truly is the #1 oil for Lyme and some co-infectants.

  • Oregano, Thyme, Marjoram – all of them are strong antimicrobials in the same family, effective against fungal and bacterial infections. Its recommended to identify the best suited from this family via muscle testing.

  • Frankincense – A muscle relaxant, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and immune-stimulant in one, Frankincense is one of the most popular essential oils used for curing Lyme disease. Basically, it reduces the inflammation of the affected parts and contributes to the control and regulation of immune-system reactions. Mixing it with 2 drops of oregano and coconut oil for topical application on the feet during the day is an innovative way to continue your treatment without bothering others with the smell. Internally, take 2 drops of this essential oil each day, which you can combine with clove, lemongrass, and helichrysum for better results.Frankincense helped me quite a bit with tendon and muscle inflammation as well as joint pain. I used it mostly externally but it can be taken internally too, although its a bit hard on the stomach. Often it is better to ingest as Boswellia capsules. Myrrh also strengthens the immune system, is very good as a mouth wash for sores and also works well for Candida.

  • Cinnamon – This aromatic oil is not only good for relaxing the mood, it is also a powerful antimicrobial substance that cures Lyme disease.  There are many who feel it is a primary killing agent;here are facebook groups to investigate for further information, see facebook groups below.

  • Tea Tree Oil – This essential oil is known to be very effective in liquefying and removing biofilms, the thin film of bacteria that settles on a surface. It is a very good antibacterial that works hand-in-hand with clove to deliver the best treatment outcoe

  • Rose, Geranium, Lavender and Rosemary oils act as a quorum sensing disruptors, which means they inhibits communication between borrelia themselves and other bacteria, making it harder to coordinate when to become active again and start the next reproduction and expansion wave. Eucalyptus has also some of these quorum sensing properties as well as Lemon. Lemon oil has also strong antimicrobial properties and stimulates the Lymphatic system. Some further info on the use of oils for quorum sensing can be found in PubMed.

  • The best way to find the right oil combination for treatment is to use energetic testing methods such as Klinghardt ART testing or any bioenergetic or bioresonance testing method. If you don't have access to testing methods I would recommend starting with a rotation protocol that contains most of the listed oils.  MORE

FYI.......Most Essential oils are Phytoestrogens

Unfortunately almost all essential oils with the exception of citrus oils contain some level of phytoestrogens.  All of your citrus oils such as lemon, lime, mandarin and orange contain little to no phytoestrogens and should be the first oils you reach for in use for body products such as lotions, shampoos and deodorants.  Coincidently citrus oils, especially lemon is very good for your liver and will help restore its full function in boosting your ability to flush out extra estrogen.

Tea Tree, Lavender, Cinnamon and Peppermint happen to be on the high end of the phytoestrogen scale.  Now in a person with balanced hormones and a healthy liver, these phytoestrogens will be no big deal.  They will not turn your sons into girls or make your husbands grow breasts.  Under normal conditions their liver will simply flush out the phytoestrogens as waste.  However as we all know those of us with Estrogen Dominance are not dealing with a normal output of estrogen or a healthy perfectly functioning liver.
